Approaches to Treating Trauma Associated with Political and Social Unrest – Spiritual and Other Practices

CE Hours 2

About this course

This presentation shifts the focus from understanding unrest and trauma toward practical self-regulation. Using the Window of Tolerance as the core framework, participants learn to recognize their own and their clients' physiological states that result from unrest. From there, the presentation introduces concrete reset rituals that address these physiological states, including spiritual practices. Participants will also be introduced to nervous system responses to social and political unrest, including the immobilizing impact that leads to symptoms such as lethargy, depression, and heightened anxiety.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate how the nervous system responds to ongoing social and political unrest
  • Explain the rationale for prioritizing self-regulation as a clinician before intervening with clients experiencing sociopolitical stress.
  • Describe the Window of Tolerance model
  • Identify the three somatic discharge levels (striated muscle/green, smooth muscle/yellow, cognitive disruption/red) and their corresponding physical symptoms.
  • Apply at least two reset rituals to interrupt dysregulation in themselves or with clients.
  • Recognize when a client or themselves has moved outside the window of tolerance and select an appropriate intervention to return to a regulated state.
