Billing the Work You’re Already Doing: CPT Best Practices and Documentation That Supports It

CE Hours 1.5

About this course

Coding mental health sessions for insurance purposes can be a complex and daunting task for most clinicians. This session is intended to clarify many of the nuances involved in creating appropriate, ethical coding and add-on submissions that maximize reimbursement and minimize audit risk and claim denials. Dr. Gina Pasquale will walk through best practices in this area and entertain questions and concerns from workshop participants.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify core CPT psychotherapy codes commonly used in mental health practice and describe general best-practice principles for their appropriate use.
  • Explain the criteria for use of the Interactive Complexity add-on code and additional Crisis Psychotherapy time codes, including when these codes are and are not clinically appropriate.
  • Apply CPT coding principles to clinical case examples in order to determine accurate coding and avoid common billing errors.
  • Describe documentation elements necessary to support standard psychotherapy codes, interactive complexity, and crisis services in a manner consistent with ethical and compliance standards.

Target Audience
